ChatGPT Plus vs Claude Pro vs Google AI Pro: Which Is Worth It?

The three mainstream $20-a-month AI chat plans are ChatGPT Plus from OpenAI, Claude Pro from Anthropic and Google AI Pro from Google. On price alone they are almost identical, so the real questions are how you pay, what you would use it for, and whether paying per use through the API would cost you less.

Google’s plan causes the most confusion because of its name. What used to be marketed as Gemini Advanced, and sold as Google One AI Premium, is now called Google AI Pro. If you search for “Gemini Advanced price” you are looking for this plan.

This guide compares the list prices from each provider’s official page, then works through a realistic office usage pattern to see what the same amount of chat would cost through each provider’s API. All prices come from the official pages linked below. Last verified: November 1, 2026.

If you want to plug in your own numbers, repeat the arithmetic shown below with your own message counts; every step is written out.

The prices side by side

PlanMonthly priceAnnual optionOfficial page
ChatGPT Plus$20Listed as monthly billing onlyOpenAI help centre, chatgpt.com/pricing
Claude Pro$20$17 a month billed annually ($200 a year)claude.com/pricing
Google AI Pro$19.99Check the plan pageGoogle AI plans

Over a year, monthly billing costs $240 for ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro ($20 × 12) and $239.88 for Google AI Pro ($19.99 × 12). Claude Pro on annual billing is $200, which saves $40 a year over its monthly price, the only meaningful price gap between the three.

Each provider also sells cheaper and more expensive tiers. OpenAI lists ChatGPT Go at $8, Google lists Google AI Plus at $4.99, and all three have higher tiers between roughly $100 and $200 or more a month for heavier use. This guide sticks to the middle tier most individuals and small offices start with.

What the plans include

Plan contents change more often than prices, and the providers describe them in their own terms, so we do not restate feature lists that may already be out of date. Read the official pages for current details, especially:

The practical test is simple: try the free tier of each with your own real tasks for a week, and pay for the one whose answers you edit least.

Worked example: subscription vs API

Suppose one office worker sends 40 messages a day, 30 days a month. Each message, including the conversation history the app sends back to the model, averages 800 input tokens, and each reply averages 600 output tokens. That is 40 × 30 = 1,200 messages a month.

We price this on one comparable model from each provider, using API prices per million tokens from the official pricing pages:

Cost of one message at $2 / $10:

Monthly: 1,200 × $0.0076 = $9.12. That is the same for all three models at current prices, because their rates are identical.

Gemini 4 Argon from December 1, 2026, at $4 / $20:

Break-even messages per day

The break-even is the plan price divided by (cost per message × 30 days). At $0.0076 a message, 30 days of one message a day costs $0.228.

Plan vs modelCalculationBreak-even
ChatGPT Plus ($20) vs GPT-6.1 Sol$20 ÷ $0.22887.7 messages a day
Claude Pro monthly ($20) vs Claude Sonnet 5.5$20 ÷ $0.22887.7 messages a day
Claude Pro annual ($17) vs Claude Sonnet 5.5$17 ÷ $0.22874.6 messages a day
Google AI Pro ($19.99) vs Gemini 4 Argon, now$19.99 ÷ $0.22887.7 messages a day
Google AI Pro ($19.99) vs Gemini 4 Argon, from Dec 1$19.99 ÷ ($0.0152 × 30 = $0.456)43.8 messages a day

At 40 messages a day, the API is cheaper in every case: $9.12 against about $20 now, and $18.24 against $19.99 for Gemini after December 1. The Gemini gap becomes small enough that a few longer conversations would tip it the other way.

Two caveats that change the answer

Token counts differ between providers. Each provider uses its own tokenizer. Anthropic states that the tokenizer used from Claude 4.7 onward produces about 30% more tokens for the same text than earlier models. If the 800 and 600 token figures were measured on another provider’s tokenizer, the same text could be about 1,040 input and 780 output tokens on Claude Sonnet 5.5: 1,040 × $2 ÷ 1,000,000 + 780 × $10 ÷ 1,000,000 = $0.00988 a message, or $11.86 a month. Still under $20.

Long conversations get expensive. The input count includes the history the app resends. A thread that has grown to 5,000 input tokens costs 5,000 × $2 ÷ 1,000,000 + $0.0060 = $0.0160 a message on the $2 / $10 models, more than double our example.

The API also does not come with a chat app. You need a tool that talks to it, and someone to set it up. For most individuals that cost in time is larger than the $10 a month difference.

Who should pick what

Before deciding, redo the sums above with your own message count and token sizes; How many words is a token? shows how to estimate token sizes.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google AI Pro the same as Gemini Advanced?

Yes, in practice. Google AI Pro is Google's paid Gemini plan. It was previously marketed as Gemini Advanced and sold as part of Google One AI Premium. It is listed at $19.99 a month on Google's AI plans page.

Which of the three plans is cheapest?

Claude Pro billed annually, at $17 a month ($200 a year). Billed monthly, Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus are both $20 and Google AI Pro is $19.99, so the monthly prices are effectively the same.

Would I save money using the API instead of a subscription?

For light to moderate use, often yes. In our worked example, 40 short messages a day cost $9.12 a month in raw API tokens on each provider's comparable model at current prices. Above roughly 88 messages a day of that size, the $20 plans come out cheaper.

Does the API give me the same features as the chat app?

No. The API is billed per token and does not include the apps, file handling, usage limits and other features each plan bundles. The comparison here covers raw token cost only.

Why does the Gemini break-even change on December 1, 2026?

Google's API pricing page lists a scheduled increase for Gemini 4 Argon from $2 to $4 per million input tokens and from $10 to $20 per million output tokens from that date, which doubles the API cost of the same usage.
