Oven Temperature Converter (Fahrenheit, Celsius, Gas Mark)
350 °F is 177 °C, which UK recipes round to 180 °C or Gas Mark 4. To convert, subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit value and multiply by 5/9. For Gas Mark 1 to 9, the Fahrenheit temperature is 250 plus 25 times the mark.
Worked example: a US cake recipe in a UK oven
A US recipe says to bake at 375 °F, and your oven is marked in Celsius.
- Subtract 32: 375 − 32 = 343.
- Multiply by 5/9: 343 × 5 ÷ 9 = 190.6 °C, so set the dial to 190 °C.
- Gas Mark: (375 − 250) ÷ 25 = Gas Mark 5.
- For a fan oven, a common adjustment is 20 °C lower: about 170 °C.
How the conversion works
°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9 · °F = °C × 9/5 + 32
Gas Mark n (1–10): °F = 250 + 25 × n · Gas Mark ¼ = 225 °F, ½ = 250 °F
- The Fahrenheit–Celsius formulas are exact, from the definitions of the two scales.
- The Gas Mark scale is a UK oven scale. Marks 1 to 10 rise in steps of 25 °F.
- Limitations: real ovens often run hotter or cooler than the dial. An oven thermometer is the best check.

Frequently asked questions
What is 350 °F in Celsius?
350 °F is 176.7 °C. Recipes and ovens usually round this to 180 °C, which is also Gas Mark 4.
What is Gas Mark 4 in Celsius and Fahrenheit?
Gas Mark 4 is 350 °F, which is about 177 °C and is usually written as 180 °C in UK recipes.
How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?
Multiply the Celsius temperature by 9/5 (or 1.8) and add 32. For example, 200 °C × 1.8 + 32 = 392 °F, which recipes often round to 400 °F.
Should I lower the temperature for a fan oven?
A common rule of thumb is to set a fan (convection) oven about 20 °C, or roughly 25 °F, lower than a conventional oven. Oven makers differ, so check your oven's manual and the recipe.
Why do Celsius values on Gas Mark charts not match the exact conversion?
Gas Mark charts use rounded Celsius values that match oven dials, such as 180 °C for Gas Mark 4 instead of the exact 176.7 °C. The difference is small compared with normal oven temperature variation.
