Worked example: days until Christmas 2026
How many days are there from Sunday, November 1, 2026 to Friday, December 25, 2026?
- Days left in November after the 1st: 30 − 1 = 29.
- Days in December up to the 25th: 25.
- Total: 29 + 25 = 54 days, which is 7 weeks and 5 days.
- Weekdays: 7 full weeks contain 7 × 5 = 35 weekdays. The remaining 5 days (Sunday, December 20 to Thursday, December 24) include 4 weekdays, for 39 weekdays.
How the date calculation works
days = end date − start date (+ 1 if both ends are counted)
- Each date is converted to a count of days since a fixed reference date in the Gregorian calendar; the difference of the two counts is the answer.
- Weekdays are counted by checking each day in the range and skipping Saturdays and Sundays.
- If the end date is before the start date, the result is negative.
- Limitations: public holidays are not removed. In the US, see the OPM list of federal holidays; other countries publish their own lists.

Frequently asked questions
How many days are there between two dates?
Subtract the earlier date from the later date. For example, from January 1 to December 31, 2026 is 364 days. If you count both January 1 and December 31, the total is 365 days.
Should I include the end date?
It depends on the question. "How many days until" usually excludes the start day and counts to the target date, which is the default here. For durations such as a hotel stay or a leave period counted in calendar days, you may need to include both ends.
How are business days counted?
This calculator counts Monday to Friday as business days and skips Saturdays and Sundays. It does not remove public holidays, which differ by country, state and employer, so subtract any holidays yourself.
Does the calculator handle leap years?
Yes. It uses the Gregorian calendar, in which a year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except century years that are not divisible by 400. So 2024 had 366 days and 2100 will have 365.
Can daylight saving time change the result?
No. Dates are counted as whole calendar days in UTC, so the hour gained or lost when clocks change does not affect the number of days.
